A World Beyond

Created by Robert Kirkman, The Walking Dead started as a series of comic books under the Image Comics label. It was published from 2003 to 2019, ending with a grand total of 193 issues. In 2010, the comic received a live-action TV adaptation, which premiered on AMC.

The TV series follows police officer Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln), who awakens from a coma to find the hospital devoid of human life. Upon leaving his ward, he discovers that the world has been overrun by the undead. Not long after, Rick meets a fellow survivor called Morgan Jones (Lennie James) and his son. However, he travels to Atlanta as soon as he is able, searching for his wife, Lori (Sarah Wayne Callies), and son, Carl (Chandler Riggs).

Eventually, Rick reunites with his family and meets a number of other survivors. The following seasons focus on the group’s attempts to live in this new post-apocalyptic world, bringing them into contact with threats both human and not. Driven to desperation and cruelty, many survivors have chosen to embrace the new status quo, making them more dangerous than the ‘walkers’ that scour the landscape in search of flesh. This has given rise to many a memorable villain, such as the Governor (David Morrissey), Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), and the Whisperers.

Featuring 11 seasons and multiple spin-off shows (such as Fear The Walking Dead and World Beyond), The Walking Dead is one of the most popular TV series of all time. Audiences have followed their favourite characters — Glenn (Steven Yeun), Maggie (Lauren Cohan), Daryl (Norman Reedus), and more — through the good times and the bad, and they have brought us smiles and tears in equal amounts.
