A definitive horror film

Written and directed by now-acclaimed film professional Sam Raimi, Evil Dead became a hit in the world of graphic horror.

Following Raimi and friend’s first foray into the realm of amateur production with the short-film Within the Woods, they successfully managed to secure funding for Evil Dead.

Marking the beginning of Raimi’s legendary career, Evil Dead is regarded as one of the most influential movies in the horror genre.

Before Raimi suited up in the directorial seat to embark into the super-heroic exploits of the Spectacular Spider-Man, he conquered the world of supernatural horror with this 1981 release.

Originally conceived and rolled out under the title Book of the Dead, Evil Dead has since asserted a strong cult following after hitting the cinema scene, regarded as a great influencer for the works of many a modern horror film maker.

With its unique blend of quirky horror, Raimi successfully turned Evil Dead into a franchise spanning decades. Now boasting multiple films and a spin-off series, Evil Dead is a seminal part of movie history - even receiving praise from best-selling horror author Stephen King, which provided much-needed publicity and allowed the film to take off in the UK.

Starring Bruce Campbell (portraying the cultural icon Ash Williams), Evil Dead launched his acting career into the public sphere of blockbuster cinema.

Following five college students as they head out on vacation to a cabin in the woods, the students find a mysterious tape. Foolishly playing it, they unwittingly release a barrage of demons and unruly spirits, setting the foundation for a story of excessive, gruesome gore - with a welcome touch of dark comedy.

Evil Dead has revelled in much controversy since its initial release, being banned in some countries due to an excess of graphic content.

With no shortage of dismemberment and painfully realistic practical effects, Evil Dead managed to chill film goers to the bone – if they were lucky enough to even get to see it.
