The Power Of The Name

Written by Tsugumi Ohba and illustrated by Takeshi Obata, Death Note is a Japanese manga and anime series. From 2003 to 2006, the manga series was readable in the Weekly Shōnen Jump, a magazine by Shueisha. Shortly after, Madhouse’s anime of the same name debuted on Nippon Television. The series concluded in 2007 after a total of 37 episodes.

Death Note follows the character of Light Yagami, a teenager who finds Shinigami Ryuk’s notebook: the Death Note. This book grants the user the ability to take the life of any individual by writing their name on its pages — so long as he knows their face, too. Throughout the series, Light (going by the vigilante name ‘Kira’) uses the supernatural power of the notebook to eliminate those who he feels go against his moral code, attempting to create a society free of crime. Meanwhile, the detective ‘L’ and his police task force attempt to put an end to his schemes.

Considered to be one of the most popular manga and anime franchises ever created, Death Note has expanded to other forms of media. It has been adapted into a 2006 light novel (written by Nisio Isin), multiple video games (made by Konami), and live-action films (both Japanese and American).
