I didn't realize until after reading this and then going back over some of my posts how often I use parentheses and italics, etc. for my jokes. A great topic to consider, especially as an aspiring funny internet writer (and also regular IRL writer) who is still honing his voice. I never considered I was writing more for myself than my reader, I think because as a blogger you sort of have to feel like you're doing it for yourself, because you love it, since so much content you spend so much time with gets seemingly lost in the void. I do feel like I've started seeing more essays and lengthier posts from bloggers getting positive feedback and touching on common sentiments in their audience and among peers. I've started to feel comfortable writing more and more as well, so here's hoping there's a sea change afoot!

wow! this was VERY enlightening. i'm a total noob to this world and i'm hittin' it pretty late in life (i just turned 36 and am a mom of 2 little boys), but i've ALWAYS had a thing for fashion (even if i couldn't afford it or fit in it). i've just started a blog about red carpet/premier-worthy/haute couture fashion and, well, have become even more obsessed. i'm not saying i'm necessarily heading in the celebrity stylist direction (although that wouldn't totally suck), but it's interesting to know how it all works. so thank you for this post. am now a follower and look fwd to learning more :) cheers!

Too funny... This might help you - I found keeping a water bottle next to the bed stopped my cat from waking me before I'm ready. Also, packing tape on the counter sticky side up, she never got on the counter the second time!

Amazing. As a hair stylist and makeup artist I can relate so much.

Everything is done for free or little and you know it's wrong but you know it's part of the game. I never started this for fame, for attention or to work in celebrity appearances. It's so hard to know where to go and how to make this work for the long term.

Thank you for writing this.

Reblogged this on <a href="http://kathrynalamode.wordpress.com/2012/01/31/1243/" rel="nofollow">Kathryn à la mode</a> and commented:
Today, dearies, I direct you to a different corner of the Internet. You all know who Rachel Zoe is, and therefore you know how incredibly stressed out she always gets styling famous people (I mean, she complains about it all the time on Bravo). But what about all those stylists who aren't famous or have a Rodger to bitch to? With awards season upon us, Amy Odell (editor of The Cut and, incidentally, a fellow Wordpress blogger) gives an amazing inside peak at the usually non-glam life of non-famous stylists and their struggles both on and off the red carpet. Do enjoy!
