Going back to where it all began, in 2014 we were introduced to Bojack Horseman. Where since making his debut on Netflix, he's become something of a phenomenon.
On the face of it, it looks like a fantastic animated
comedy, but once you delve into the story and the inner-workings of Bojack’s
mind, you realise just how unique and brilliant this show is.
Based in Hollywood (otherwise known as Hollywoo after season one) it
follows the adventures of Bojack Horseman (Will Arnett), a washed up 90’s
sitcom star. His show Horsin’ Around was a big hit in the US during that era,
but now in the present day he’s a nightmare for his agent Princess Carolyn (Amy
Sedaris) who’s desperately trying to get him work, but he feels he’s too good
for what’s out there.
This is despite him being largely dependent on
drugs, alcohol and partying with his roommate Todd Chavez (Aaron Paul) – who’s
arguably the best characters on the show. Their full throttle lifestyle makes
for hilarious viewing, with his freeloading roommate clearly a bad (or good)
influence on Bojack depending on how you see it.
But on the side he’s working on a major project,
producing an autobiography in attempt to get himself a part that he really
wants. After failing to make any progress with it, we’re introduced to Diane
Nguyen (Alison Brie) who he employs as a ghost writer. Their relationship is
one that becomes incredibly complex but it also introduces us to the lovably
enthusiastic Mr. Peanutbutter (Paul F. Tompkins). Who Bojack tries to avoid but
their paths always cross, much to his frustration and Mr Peanutbutter’s delight - who sees the pair as best friends.
These main characters all have their own characteristics
that make them brilliant and the fascinating story-line sees us really go deep into
their lives. We see Bojack’s demise, Princess Carolyn’s desperation to become a
mother, Diane ambitions to become a respected author, Mr. Peanutter wanting to make
everyone happy and Todd just being, well Todd. Where despite being something of a
slacker, he’s hard not to love and he comes up with some of the wackiest
business ideas imaginable – he’s superb.
Since first hitting Netflix in 2014, it’s gone onto
receive various critical acclaim with no other animated show like it – leading to
six seasons worth of quality entertainment. It’s something of a black
comedy/tragicomedy, bringing you very close to the characters and their
problems but also providing plenty of laughs in the process.
The show is set in a world where anthropomorphic
animals and humans live side-by-side in LA. The bulk of the characters are
animals, but what this series does so well is giving them emotions and making
them feel fully human. This is what makes it so unique and unlike anything else that’s
out there, just like our Bojack Horseman merch.
